Invoicing tips for freelancers
- Put a due date and the ways you accept payment (bank transfer, PayPal, Wise) right on the invoice. It saves you the "so how do I pay you?" email.
- Number invoices in order (INV-0001, INV-0002…). When a client asks "which one?" three months from now, you'll both know.
- Spell out late-payment terms in the notes, e.g. “Payment due within 14 days; 2% late fee thereafter.” It's a lot easier to enforce a rule the client saw up front.
Frequently asked questions
- Do freelancers need to charge tax on invoices?
- Only if you're registered for it, and that depends on your country. If you're registered for VAT/GST/sales tax, add the rate in the Tax field. If not, leave it at 0 and add a short note saying tax doesn't apply.
- How do I invoice for hourly work?
- Add a line describing the work, put your hours in the quantity field and your hourly rate in the price. The total works itself out, so there's no calculator involved.
- Is this freelancer invoice template really free?
