The thing that trips up people new to invoicing in the States: there's no federal VAT. Sales tax is set at the state and local level, and most B2B services aren't taxed at all. So this template starts with no tax, and you add a state sales-tax rate only when it actually applies to what you sell.
Bill in US dollars, itemize your services or products, and download a clean PDF. It can be in your client's inbox the same day you wrap the job.
Tip: in the print dialog choose “Save as PDF”.

What a compliant invoice needs in United States
- Your business name and address, and the client's name and address.
- A unique invoice number and both the issue and due dates.
- Itemized services or products with amounts, plus any applicable state sales tax.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to charge sales tax on a US invoice?
- Usually only on taxable goods and certain services, and only in states where you have nexus. Most professional/B2B services are exempt. If it applies, put the correct state rate in the tax field. If not, leave it at 0.
- Is an EIN required on invoices?
- No, it doesn't legally have to be on the invoice. Lots of businesses add their EIN or business number anyway, because it makes payment and 1099 reporting smoother on the client's side.
